Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is a 2004 American dark comedy fantasy film directed by Brad Silberling. It is an adaptation of the first three novels of A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. The film stars Emily Browning as Violet Baudelaire, Liam Aiken as Klaus Baudelaire, Kara and Shelby Hoffman as Sunny Baudelaire and Jim Carrey as the villainous Count Olaf, with narration by Jude Law. The film tells the story of three orphans who are adopted by a mysterious villain who attempts to steal their late parents' fortune.

Nickelodeon Movies purchased the film rights to Daniel Handler's book series in May 2000 and soon began development of a film. Barry Sonnenfeld signed on to direct in June 2002. He hired Handler to adapt the screenplay and courted Jim Carrey for Count Olaf. Sonnenfeld eventually left over budget concerns in January 2003 and Brad Silberling took over. Robert Gordon rewrote Handler's script, and principal photography started in November 2003. A Series of Unfortunate Events was entirely shot using sound stages and backlots at Paramount Pictures and Downey Studios. The film received generally favorable reviews from critics, grossed approximately $209 million worldwide, and won the Academy Award for Best Makeup. Carrey's performance as Count Olaf was widely praised.

Sinopsis / Plot / Resensi / Ringkasan Cerita / Reviu:

Violet Baudelaire (Emily Browning), her intelligent younger brother Klaus (Liam Aiken), and their sharp-toothed, precocious baby sister Sunny (Kara and Shelby Hoffman) are orphaned when a mysterious fire destroys their house and kills their parents. Mr. Poe (Timothy Spall), in charge of the Baudelaire estate and fortune, entrusts them to their closest geographical relative, the villainous stage actor Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), who is only interested in inheriting the Baudelaire fortune. Olaf makes the Baudelaires do harsh chores, even demanding them to make dinner for him and his acting troupe.

On the day Olaf receives full custody of the Baudelaires, he drives them to a far out gas station and claims that he is going inside to buy the children soda. However, the Baudelaires discover that Olaf purposely parked the car directly on the railroad tracks in hopes of it getting hit by oncoming train so that he can claim their fortune. Thankfully, Violet and Klaus are able to turn the direction of the train so it doesn't hit them, and they are taken out of Olaf's custody when Mr. Poe thinks Sunny was driving the car. Before they leave however, Olaf threatens the children by saying he will always find them.

The orphans are then taken to stay with Dr. Montgomery Montgomery (Billy Connolly), a friendly herpetologist is planning to take the children with him on an expedition to Peru. However, Olaf arrives in disguise as a scientist named Stephano. Violet tries to tell Monty she thinks he is after a snake called The Incredible Deadly Viper, which is a rare snake and is one of the friendliest in the animal kingdom. Just the next day Monty is found dead by the children, and the authorities have been tricked into thinking the viper killed him. Thankfully Sunny is able to prove that Olaf lied about the viper.

The children then live with their widowed Aunt Josephine, who has many irrational fears. Olaf arrives again, as a sailor as Captain Sham. When the Baudelaires get home after shopping in a market, Josephine is gone and a hurricane is approaching. But, Klaus decodes a suicide note nearby and finds their aunt is in Curdled Cave. During the hurricane it is discovered in a secret room the late Uncle Ike was investigating fires, and Josephine's irrational hurricane fears are coming true, leaving them on the beams of the now destroyed house, which they escape from.

After sailing Lake Lachrymose to Curdled Cave, Josephine is rescued and reveals Olaf forced her to write the note. Before they reach civilization their boat is attacked by leeches, and Olaf appears, killing Josephine by pushing her into the waters after she corrects his incorrect spelling. The children are then back in Olaf's Custody, and Klaus and Violet are immediately involved in a play called The Marvelous Marriage, which involves Violet and Olaf's characters being married. However, it will be real because of a book stating if relatives are married they are entitled to their spouses' money, and if they are under 18, their guardian must agree to it. Of course, Olaf is their guardian, and Olaf reveals Sunny is being held hostage in a cage suspended from the air. If Violet refuses to pledge the marriage or finds a way out of it Sunny will be dropped to her death from the cage.

Klaus escapes the set and finds the tower part of Olaf's estate, and a window resembles a picture of an eye he found in Aunt Josephine's house. After adjusting it he finds it leads to their mansion, and Klaus realizes Olaf was the cause of this fire, setting it by directing light through the window. He then proceeds to burn the marriage certificate with it, and avails, preventing Olaf from gaining the fortune. He is forced to serve a life sentence, but before that, every hardship he'd put onto the children. Violet, Klaus and Sunny are allowed to visit their old home one last time, where the viewer gets a hint at what the mansion looked like once. A letter lost in the mail finally arrives, and the children find a spyglass announcing their family's secret society. The children are then seen in Mr. Poe's car, sleeping, being "Very Fortunate Indeed."
